Music and Me
Hi all! I’m Sara and I’m a freshman here at Converse. I’m originally from a small town in the north of Spain, known for its coastal landscapes (and no, Spain is NOT in Mexico; I had to cross the ocean). Asturias is famous for its green mountains and unpredictable weather; you can experience all four seasons in a single day! Coming to the States has always been a dream for me, and now that I’m here, it feels surreal to finally be living it! But I must admit, I was scared to face it at first. It's such a big opportunity that you just can’t easily find in Spain.
Running has been a big part of my life since I started in 6th grade, and it is something that still motivates me every day. I compete in cross country and track, which not only keeps me active but also allows me to spend a lot of time outdoors, something I really enjoy. Running has also taught me discipline and perseverance, qualities that have shaped me both on and off the track.
Outside of running, I’m double majoring in accounting and economics. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to study. I knew I liked numbers and problem-solving, but I was not confident about which path to take. I finally realized that accounting and economics were the perfect combination.
Even though I spend most of my time running, I’ve also had a connection to music. I played the piano until 7th grade, and while I eventually stopped, it gave me an appreciation for music.
An example of something that I like right now:
Lately, the song I’ve been playing on repeat is “Cosas que no te dije” by Saiko. I really enjoy how he pairs emotional lyrics with a smooth beat that makes the song so catchy. At the same time, it has this nostalgic vibe that really sticks with me. One of the reasons I really enjoy this song is that it feels so relatable. Every time I hear it, it hits me a little differently depending on my mood. I also love how versatile it is. I can listen to it while relaxing or even while running. Maybe it is not the best song for motivation, but hey, if I can overthink my life and get some miles in at the same time, why not? It’s definitely one of those songs that I don’t see myself getting tired of anytime soon.
An example of music that is deeply important to me:
One sing that will always have a special meaning to me is “Where Have You Been” by Rihanna. It was the first song I heard when I arrived in the States, playing in the car with my teammates. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nerves (at that moment everything around me felt like one of those American movies I used to watch as a kid). Now, every time I hear it, I’m taken back to that day: the mix of emotions and the realization that I was stepping into something completely different. It’s funny how a song can hold so many memories, but for me, this one is a reminder of how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown since that first day.
A song I don’t really connect with:
If I have to pick a song that I just don’t really connect wit, it would be “Baby” by Justin Bieber. I know it was a huge hit when it came out, and a lot of people have nostalgia for it, but for some reason, I could never get into it. The repetitive chorus just never clicked with me. Though all said, I get why so many people love it. It’s catchy and definitely a classic. Maybe if I had different memories attached to it, I’d feel differently.

Hi Sara, I’ve never heard of Saiko before but I liked the song that you shared! I like Rihanna’s ”Where have you been.” I also don’t connect with Justin Bieber’s song “Baby.” The repetitive chorus is one of the reasons I wasn’t able to get into it too.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!! It's almost like you heard it in my car or something ;) It's definitely my favorite song on your list because it's so fun and upbeat. I guess I gotta learn the new song you're into, or maybe I should finish learning the Quevedo song first.
ReplyDeleteHola hola, coming to the US was also a dream of mine. And give it a try for the song that you want to go to music. I have never heard of Saiko as a Spanish speaker, but I liked it very much. You are right about the connection between emotions and symphony! Another that also is like that, and I don't know if you have listened, is Si No Estas by Iñogo Quintero, which also, I think, brings the same sentiment as yours with Saiko.
ReplyDeleteHello Sara! I love "Where Have You Been" it is one of my favorite songs and I used to dance to this all the time on Just Dance.
